On Friday, Liz and I decided to do the traditional tourist route through many of London's main attractions. It was a lovely, sunny day. We walked through Green Park to Buckingham Palace, and ate English raspberries by the fountain. We had a lovely stroll along the water through Birdcage Walk, which led us to Parliament Square. That's where you can take a picture with the guard. In my mind I had always wanted a silly picture with him, but when I saw him in real life, surrounded by a million people, he looked so thoroughly displeased with his job that I felt too bad. We sat in the grass in front of Westminster Abbey and found our favorite gargoyles. We passed Big Ben and the London Eye, and it was on this bridge that I started uncontrollably laughing at things that weren't funny, signaling that it was most definitely time to get food. After a rest, we continued along the Thames, which was lively with street performers. We eventually ended up at Tate Modern, my favorite part of this day. Tate is a large modern art museum, and Liz and I walked in silence through the first few exhibits. When we began talking more, the following became incredibly apparent: I was in a modern art museum with a mechanical engineer.
Lol.
"Why is this one art? Why put just one red square?"
"This is a box. I can make a box." and later, upon reading the description, "A metaphor for an open grave?! Its a box!"
"Does that look like Bacchus the god of wine to you? Is that what you're getting from this?"
"what are these? Are they mushrooms?"
"I think they look like jellyfish."
"Oh, yep. Yeah that's it. You're totally right."
But Tate was very cool. Lots of famous artists have works there: Picasso, Mondrian, Matisse, Dali. And it smells like modern art there, too. I can't even describe the smell.
Afterwards we walked across Millennium Bridge to St. Paul's cathedral, our last stop before heading home on very tired feet. That night, we went with a friend to Everest, an Indian restaurant/hookah bar, and enjoyed some delicious food before turning in early. Meaning around 1am.
Stay tuned.
Sending love.
